The economy and cost of living are leading concerns for American voters ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research report released October 15.
The survey found that 85% of voters considered the economy one of their most important election issues, while 84% said the same about the cost of living. Both Republican and Democratic voters placed significant importance on these concerns. Health care was identified as a leading issue by 69%.
Higher fuel and transportation costs are also putting pressure on household budgets. In October 17 reporting, The Associated Press examined how those expenses are affecting drivers, airline passengers and businesses. Some companies have absorbed part of their higher costs, while others have raised prices or delivery charges.
As candidates compete for control of Congress, voters are evaluating economic proposals against the expenses they face in daily life.
The AP-NORC survey was conducted October 8–12 among 1,119 adults, with election findings based on registered voters. Its results provide a snapshot of opinion during that period rather than a prediction of election results.
